Hand hygiene is now required for LEED-EB (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings) certification and recertification. The January 2008 LEED for Existing Buildings: Operation & Maintenance calls out a requirement for a green cleaning policy. This policy requires the development of strategies for promoting and improving hand hygiene, including both hand washing and the use of alcohol-based waterless hand sanitizers.
